How it works

When PNG is better than JPG
PNG is lossless: every edit and every save keeps the image exactly as it is. That makes it the right choice for images you will edit further, for graphics and screenshots with sharp text, and for images with transparent areas, which JPG cannot store.
The trade-off is size. A PNG of a 12-megapixel photo is often 15 to 25 MB, several times larger than the HEIC. For sharing photos, JPG is usually the better choice.
Transparency and color accuracy
Some HEIC images, such as stickers and cut-outs made on an iPhone, have a transparent background. The PNG keeps that transparency. The photo’s color profile is embedded as well, so wide-gamut Display P3 colors are shown correctly in editors and browsers.
Rotation is applied during the conversion, so portrait photos come out upright in every program.
